US Birth Tourism becoming flourishing business
By DEVIN DWYER | Apr 14, 2010
Millions of foreign tourists visit the United States every year, and a growing number return home with a brand new U.S. citizen in tow.
Thousands of legal immigrants, who do not permanently reside in the United States but give birth here, have given their children the gift of citizenship, which the U.S. grants to anyone born on its soil.
The number of U.S. births to non-resident mothers rose 53 percent between 2000 and 2006, according to the most recent data from the National Center for Health Statistics. Total births rose 5 percent in the same period.
Among the foreigners who have given birth here, including international travelers passing through and foreign students studying at U.S. universities, are “birth tourists,” women who travel to the United States with the explicit purpose of obtaining citizenship for their child.
Catering to the women is a nascent industry of travel agencies and hotel chains seeking to profit from the business.
The Marmara Manhattan, a Turkish-owned luxury hotel on New York’s City Upper East Side, markets birth tourism packages to expectant mothers abroad, luring more than a dozen pregnant guests and their families to the United States to give birth last year alone.
“What we offer is simply a one-bedroom suite accommodation for $ 7,750, plus taxes, for a month, with airport transfer, baby cradle and a gift set for the mother,” Marmara Hotel spokeswoman Alexandra Ballantine said.
The hotel estimates the total cost of the package at $ 45,000.
Most women stay for two months, Ballantine said, and they make medical arrangements on their own. “Guests arrange and pay for these by themselves,” she said of hospital costs that can approach $ 30,000.
For those with the means to pay, it’s a small price to give a child the full benefits of U.S. citizenship, including the ability to travel freely to and from the United States, easy access to a U.S. education and a chance to start a life here.
“We found a company on the Internet and decided to go to Austin [Texas] for our child’s birth,” Turkish mother Selin Burcuoglu told Istanbul’s Hurriyet Daily News. “I don’t want [my daughter] to deal with visa issues. American citizenship has so many advantages.”
The greatest of those advantages may be the ability of the citizen child to later sponsor the legal immigration of his or her entire family permanently to this country, experts say.

Q&A: Working full-time at Gamestop, what should I expect for payment?
Question by JKL: Working full-time at Gamestop, what should I expect for payment?
Well, I’m applying for Gamestop in Austin, Texas. I put $ 9.00 for asking wage, since I was making $ 8.00 at my previous job at HEB. However, I’m not sure at all… because I’ve been looking around and a lot of people have claimed that they are only receiving minimum wage? I know they offer benefits for merchandise in the store, but I’m not going to be spending all my money on games… Probably not often enough to take advantage of it.
Anyone have experience with Gamestop stores? How much I should expect for Full-Time? It’s also Christmas season soon….

between minimum wage, and $ 1 more than minimum wage to start. But, they might start you a bit higher, since it is the holiday season, and they might be thinking you’re planning on leaving right after the holidays.

How much should I make after 7+ years at Lowes?
Question by yahwhatever: How much should I make after 7+ years at Lowes?
I’ve worked for Lowes ( like Home Depot ) for nearly 7 1/2 years.
I work as a stocker in the Austin,Texas area, and make 11.13 an hour.
I have experience working as a c.s.a. in a department as well. ( I switched back to stocking due to better hours. )
I’m a model employee – never late, and staying late to get the job done. I give 100 % every day. If I am told to do something, the job gets done.
I am however aware that I make the same wage as those that just start at Lowes.
I have not had a review* in around 4 + years. ( *This is where the boss talks to you about job performance, and they give you your raise )
I’m a very weak person when it comes to my rights, and they take advantage of this.
What should I actually be making wage wise ?
Thanks in advance.

It’s really not unusual for this to happen – the hiring wage ends up increasing and those that have been in the job end up getting less than those that are walking in on their first day.
You can talk to your boss about it. Attitude is important, you must not get sh*tty. Tell him you understand a higher starting wage is needed to attract talent but you have been doing the job and doing it well for years and you would like your salary re-evaluated. It might work for you and it seriously might not. In the end it’s their choice to pay what they want to who they want…fair? no but it is life.
As a side note,
I was under the impression that Lowe’s gave annual reviews – have you been overlooked for this? If so, that is another issue (but not worth mentioning if others have not had one either.)
Good luck!

does my team have a chance to win? should i change my lineup? week 14 playoff game 1?
Question by chico: does my team have a chance to win? should i change my lineup? week 14 playoff game 1?
Well I barely got into the playoffs and am wondering if I even have a chance….I’m team a and he is team b….
Team a
Qb: matt ryan vs car (big ben on the bench vs cinci)
Rb: turner vs car, j charles vs sd, blount vs wash (choice vs phi on bench)
Wr: andre johnson vs balt, floyd vs kc (harvin vs nyg, j ford vs jax, earl bennett vs ne on bench)
Kicker: kundiff vs hous
Def: nyg vs minni
Let me know if u would change my lineup at all.
Team b:
Qb: kitna vs phili
Rb: foster vs balt, c johnson vs indy
Flex: santonio holmes vs miami (I’m using a rb but he may change this he has b jax on the bench)
Wr: miles austin vs phili, t.o. vs. Pit
K: suisham vs cinci
Def: new england vs chicago
Now let me know what u think….I personally think I have a chance but it is slim….it should be a close game I think but the fact that he has chris johnson going against indy may give him a huge advantage….I don’t know…more importantly, should I play big ben vs cinci and had trouble picking my wr’s
I can also add james starks vs det on ww….does anyone think he is worth the gamble? Charles is playing sd at home and they r very strong against the run

Answer by Sports Pro
QB- You
RB- im going with you becuaase both your RBs are solid with good matchups while he has the struggling CJ and Foster against a tough def
Flex- Him, Blount is splitting carries while Holmes is effective
WR- Him, Austin and TO are very good recievers, while you have the injured Andre and the pretty bad Floyd
D/ST- about the same
I would say you can get this win. His recievers and flex are not going to score that big on you and you should be fine with who you have.

Through idle discussions with people who work at gamestop locations, I understand that starting wages are minimum, and that an Assist. Manager position pays around 8.25-.50/hr depending on your asking starting price. When you have the interview, if you haven’t already, discuss it with them and state instead that you’d like to consider their best offer, maybe they can pay more than minimum for ya.
Either way, the 15-20% discount or whatever they offer for employees is a pretty sweet deal…

Should I accept this Fantasy Football Trade?
Question by Ian M: Should I accept this Fantasy Football Trade?
I need help deciding whether to accept this trade:
I lose:
Brett Favre
Rashard Mendenhall
Steve Smith (CAR)
I gain:
Philip Rivers
Brandon Jacobs
Roy Williams
The rest of my team which might sway the decision:
QB (start 1): Jay Cutler, Vince Young
RB (start 2): Chris Johnson, Marshawn Lynch, Jonathon Stewart
WR (start 3): Anquan Boldin, Michael Crabtree, Steve Breaston, Austin Collie, Jericho Cotchery
TE (start 1): Dallas Clark, Zach Miller
Flex (start 1)
Obviously, Rivers is a huge upgrade at QB. Smith and Williams are essentially equal the way they’ve been playing this year, maybe even advantage to Williams. But Mendenhall I’m worried about losing. Obviously Johnson is my #1, but who can I fill in with #2? Lynch is a possibility or maybe Jacobs. And then my flex will always either go to a WR or TE.
What do you think? Should I accept?

You are losing to much in my opinion and getting crap in return. Rivers is the only good piece in the trade for you and the other 2 are garbage.

Should I trade MJD for DeSean Jackson and Jay Cutler?
Question by fantasyloser: Should I trade MJD for DeSean Jackson and Jay Cutler?
I took a Hit in the QB situation when Tony Romo went out and scrambled to pick up Sam Bradford, Alex Smith, and Chad Pennington–waiting to see how those 3 play out. I dont really think Cutler will have that much affect on my team. So the real trade is MJD for DeSean Jackson. Thinking more about playoffs than this week coming up. I will probably be playing this guy in the playoffs too, so don’t want to give him any sort of advantage;)
Here is my team:
QBSam Bradford, StL QB
RBArian Foster, Hou RB
RBAhmad Bradshaw, NYG RB
RB/WRMaurice Jones-Drew, Jac RB
WRPercy Harvin, Min WR
WRMike Williams, TB WR
TEDustin Keller, NYJ
D/ST Cardinals, Ari
K Rob Bironas, Ten
BENCH:
Rashard Mendenhall, Pit RB
Austin Collie, Ind WR
Mike Williams, Sea WR
Brian Hartline, Mia WR
Troy Smith, SF
Chad Pennington, Mia
Chiefs D/ST, KC D/ST

Ordinarily I’d say no, but you are pretty well off at RB, so I think it’s smart to put yourself in the best shape for playoffs.

Q&A: Which university should I transfer to?
Question by fkhan: Which university should I transfer to?
Hi guys! I currently am a sophomore at Richland College in Dallas, TX and at this moment I am struggling with choosing the right university to transfer to. My two top choices are The University of Washington in Seattle, WA and The University of Texas at Austin. My reason to want to go to UW is because many of my friends reside in Seattle (I graduated from high school there,) they have their own Medical School (I am a Pre-Med major,) and I just love the Seattle lifestyle and weather. The advantages of UT Austin is that it is a huge uni which is what I am looking for, it is near home but far enough for me to live on campus, its very diverse, has amazing programs, I will be paying in-state tuition, be able to visit home more often and its cheaper to live in Austin then Seattle. So my reasons for each uni are quite different, and I have a hard time making decisions such as these, I need guidance!

Answer by ownpool
Go to UT. You will save thousands of dollars on tuition and medical school is expensive.
There is no advantage to earning the undergraduate degree at a university which has a medical school. The medical schools prefer educational diversity and do not give preference to applicants who are earning the bachelor’s degree at their university.
Unless you have kept in very close touch with your friends, it is unlikely in most people’s experiences that high school friendships will continue in college after a two-year interruption.
