US Birth Tourism becoming flourishing business

Millions of foreign tourists visit the United States every year, and a growing number return home with a brand new U.S. citizen in tow.

Thousands of legal immigrants, who do not permanently reside in the United States but give birth here, have given their children the gift of citizenship, which the U.S. grants to anyone born on its soil.

The number of U.S. births to non-resident mothers rose 53 percent between 2000 and 2006, according to the most recent data from the National Center for Health Statistics. Total births rose 5 percent in the same period.

Among the foreigners who have given birth here, including international travelers passing through and foreign students studying at U.S. universities, are “birth tourists,” women who travel to the United States with the explicit purpose of obtaining citizenship for their child.

Catering to the women is a nascent industry of travel agencies and hotel chains seeking to profit from the business.

The Marmara Manhattan, a Turkish-owned luxury hotel on New York’s City Upper East Side, markets birth tourism packages to expectant mothers abroad, luring more than a dozen pregnant guests and their families to the United States to give birth last year alone.

“What we offer is simply a one-bedroom suite accommodation for $ 7,750, plus taxes, for a month, with airport transfer, baby cradle and a gift set for the mother,” Marmara Hotel spokeswoman Alexandra Ballantine said.

The hotel estimates the total cost of the package at $ 45,000.

Most women stay for two months, Ballantine said, and they make medical arrangements on their own. “Guests arrange and pay for these by themselves,” she said of hospital costs that can approach $ 30,000.

For those with the means to pay, it’s a small price to give a child the full benefits of U.S. citizenship, including the ability to travel freely to and from the United States, easy access to a U.S. education and a chance to start a life here.

“We found a company on the Internet and decided to go to Austin [Texas] for our child’s birth,” Turkish mother Selin Burcuoglu told Istanbul’s Hurriyet Daily News. “I don’t want [my daughter] to deal with visa issues. American citizenship has so many advantages.”

The greatest of those advantages may be the ability of the citizen child to later sponsor the legal immigration of his or her entire family permanently to this country, experts say.

Well, I’m applying for Gamestop in Austin, Texas. I put $ 9.00 for asking wage, since I was making $ 8.00 at my previous job at HEB. However, I’m not sure at all… because I’ve been looking around and a lot of people have claimed that they are only receiving minimum wage? I know they offer benefits for merchandise in the store, but I’m not going to be spending all my money on games… Probably not often enough to take advantage of it.

Anyone have experience with Gamestop stores? How much I should expect for Full-Time? It’s also Christmas season soon….

Sure, credit cards can do a lot of immoral things to people, but it is mainly the consumers fault for failing to understand what they are getting themselves into.

I love credit cards. This may sound absurd to most people. But I don’t believe in buying anything in this day and age without being rewarded for it.

I am 19 years old, started with a Secured Credit Card, then got my American Express Blue Cash, and now have a Chase Freedom MasterCard to use for everywhere that does not take my American Express. I pretty much abandoned my secured card but do not believe in closing credit cards.

I have a credit score of 750, have a great savings and investment plan in which I am able to invest 40% of my paycheck, 5% in which is put into a 401k, and matched, the other 35% goes into my brokerage account, and I have saved up over $ 30,000 in investments, while working part time since I was 16, have never carried a credit card balance, go to school full time at UT Austin, have no loans, pay my phone bill, car insurance, gas, utilities, and am reimbursed for tuition through work. I also purchased my car on my credit card, and paid it off the same day and was able to earn a whopping amount of cash back.

I just really dont understand why people hate them so much. I have been able to reap the benefits of a credit card. Thank you mr. american express blue, and mr chase freedom for letting me take advantage of you.

People are stupid for ever financing anything. WHy is the concept of paying for things in full so hard to understand. THe only thing that should ever be financed, and only if it must, is a home. THeres no reason for anything else to be financed. I hope the world learns one day to be responsible for their actions, and instead of being dependent on everyone else, takes responsibility for their finances, and that way we can improve the growth of our economy, and improve our 0.3% gdp growth.

Anyways, Im just tired of hearing all the crap about people losing their homes and crying about it, people paying everything on credit and carrying the balance, people making stupid decisions and blaming it all on someone else. I mean seriously, yes its wrong and crooked for companies to do some things like subprime loans, but what kind of idiot that makes 60,000 takes out an ARM worth 600,000. fucking retard. anyways, i just wanted to vent. thanks to whever reads this.
oh yea, and to everyone that is scared to accept a credit card, and scared about inquiries. inform yourself. i will gladly accept any credit card that will raise my credit availability. inquiries only negatively hurt your credit for a few months. the long term effects of high credit availability with no debt will make my score soar. inform yourselves people.

between minimum wage, and $ 1 more than minimum wage to start. But, they might start you a bit higher, since it is the holiday season, and they might be thinking you’re planning on leaving right after the holidays.

Question by Am I Right?: Would colleges accept this SAT score, GPA, etc?
I’m a junior, and I currently have a 3.96 GPA. I took the Jan 24 SAT, and i’m expecting anywhere between a 1900-2200. This is the first time I have ever taken the real SAT (but I have taken practice tests).

I’m looking into University of Texas-Austin, Baylor, and Rice….and maybe some of the Ivy League Schools like Brown and Duke (I don’t know if Duke is Ivy League or not)

I’m also doing alot of volunteering outside of school, such as helping out at schools, and community events. I’m not in any athletics because I recently moved to the US…and I’m not the athletic type as well. I also signed up with the local food bank and the SPCA. Oh, and I’m also going to be starting violin lessons soon.

I’m aware that universities such as Rice and Duke expect SAT Subject Tests. I am planning on taking 3 of them (Bio E, Math I, and Chem). My mother also told me that you have a bit of an advantage if you’re a minority (I am).

So, do you think it’s possible if my choices of colleges would accept me? Would they mind if I don’t have much athletics (I was on the track team for a year, and that’s it)? Please tell me your thoughts. Thank you!!!
I also forgot to add that I might be inducted into the National Honor Society at my school this year, since I’m new. I’m also in a club where we help out the people with special needs at our school.
Im pretty sure my GPA is unweighted, and I’m East Indian.
And yes, I’m a Texas resident BUT I’m not in the top 10%
Because I used to be in Canada, I didnt really get a shot at AP. If the school I went to had AP, I would have been able to get a better GPA.

For future reference, Duke is in the ACC athletic conference, not the Ivy.

In order to get into the Ivy League schools, Duke or Rice, you will need to get an SAT score on the high end of that range — or higher. Also, that 3.96 will have to be unweighted. If it is weighted, you will have to do better.

You will probably be good for Baylor, and good for UT — if you are a texas resident.

At most of those schools, being an underrepresented minority will help. Being an overrepresented minority (i.e., Asian) will probably hurt. It should have no effect at UT — as most public universities are prohibited from looking at race.

There is Three Reasons Why I THINK Nexus is going to win,THUS continuing The War:

Tonight we just saw that Main Event Match between Jericho and Edge vs Cena and Bret.Jericho and Edge were taken out by Nexus and they started to surround Bret and Cena.Here comes R-Truth and Morrison,still outnumbered.Jericho and Edge thinks about leaving until they ran back into the ring and helped team WWE.A Brawl started with Nexus running away and TEAM WWE STANDING TALL.Team WWE has the advantage going into the match.Every time someone has a advantage going into a PPV Match,that person who had the advantage LOSES.

Then we see that The Great Khali is gone from the match and the match is suppose to be a 7 on 7.John Cena,Jericho,Edge,Hart,Morrison,and Truth.That’s 6 on 7.You see The Miz saying that he will decide AT SUMMERSLAM.Does that sound a Little Strange that he will decide AT the PPV where they are suppose to be having the match?I think one team is going to be screwed and it’s not Team Nexus,but we won’t know till Sunday.

Ok,

I’ve been doing a little research and it’s amazing to see what kind of tax break an investment property can be.

I still need specific details as to what all you can itemize on your taxes when it comes to your investment property.

So far I’ve heard that you can deduct:
Morgage Interest
Depreciation
Management Fees
Maintenance

Are there any other tax advantages that I am missing? Can you claim the Property Insurance?

Any and all property related tax info is greatly appreciated.

Think of it as a business. Any expense that is required to keep the business running. If your property is out of state, you can deduct travel expenses to check on your property. Insurance. Accounting fees. The list can be endless.

Question by jdevans3: Is there much difference b/t getting a grad degree from a place like University of Texas or a lesser school?
First off, i want to put a few texas schools in perspective. say Rice is tier 1, UT at Austin is tier 2 (although not by much, but bear with me), and another school, say mine, Texas A&M University- Kingsville is tier 3

Ok, so say theres a student, lets call him me, gets a his undergrad degree at this tier 3 school and he wants to continue his education and get his grad degree. it would be alot easier just to stay at the same school, but he could go to another, like UT in Austin. What are the long term advantages to going to UT? would there be more opportunities if i were to get my grad degree at UT?

btw im a engineering major
i say texas a&m kingsville, which is NOT the same as texas A&M

I can tell you would do fine in Austin. A degree from A&M is , to me, better, because everyone in Texas knows you have to be SMART to even get in at A&M.

Question by hivey13: Would study abroad in Istanbul or Paris be better on my application to become a foreign service officer?
I have a choice between a semester in Paris and a semester in Istanbul this fall. I am a Government and Economics double major with a minor in French at the University of Texas at Austin. I would like to become a foreign service officer in an economic or politics career path but I am not sure which will help me more. Improving my language in French? Or studying in a more challenging abroad location such as Istanbul that has the advantage of being an emerging regional power/part of Muslim world(kind of). French school: Sciences PO ranked 52 globally in Social Sciences. Istanbul: Bogazici University no where near as good but still up there for Turkey at least. I would be studying in English at both universities as my French is not sufficient and I do not know a word of Turkish.
